The festivals, and what each one does to the roads
Held on the expo grounds in the middle of downtown Napa, which means a festival crowd and a small town using the same few streets. It falls on a holiday weekend, so the valley is already full before the gates open. We come in early and wait off the main road rather than joining the queue for it.
Golden Gate Park has no set-down at the gates, so the last stretch is a walk whatever you arrive in. The park empties into a residential grid with no obvious pickup point and, by then, no signal to arrange one — which is why the pin is agreed and shared with your group before anyone goes in.
Pier 80 is an industrial site on the bay side with a short list of approach roads and nothing around it to absorb the traffic. Everyone leaves along the same stretch, so the pickup is set back from the pier rather than at it, and the walk is shorter than the wait would have been.
Free, three days, and spread across several meadows in Golden Gate Park, which means road closures rather than a single gate. Most of the crowd arrives by transit and leaves all at once. The useful thing here is knowing which streets are shut on which day and setting the pickup outside them.
Sunday afternoons in a small grove off Sloat Boulevard, with residential parking around it and very little of it. Concerts are free and finish in daylight, so the problem is not the dark, it is that a few thousand people leave a quiet neighbourhood at the same minute.
